Best time to pick tomatoes

Most people let their tomatoes over-ripen on the vine.  Here's some good info about why you really shouldn't do it that way and how you SHOULD do it.

Re: Best time to pick tomatoes

Well, I don't have to worry about my tomatoes "over-ripening" on the vine because last night someone or something (deer, maybe?) took them right off the vines in the pots in the front of my house.  Bold, weren't they!  So now, I have no fresh tomatoes for the entire year.  There's not enough growing time left to start planting anymore and the vines left in the pots don't have any more blossoms on them, so they will not produce fruit.  Dang.  I do soooo love a fresh green salad with homegrown beefsteak tomatoes and heritage weird shaped tomatoes, but now it will have to wait until next year.
