In my German/Swedish family, we did not make gravy with our dumplings. We usually made the dough homemade of course because there was no such thing as frozen bread dough when I was growing up, which is why we cherished the days when our gramma's and mom's made dumplings. It was a long, arduous meal but we did not use gravy so that saved some time. We did, however, use LOTS of butter on our bread dumplings. This was usually a meal they made when they sent us kids out berry picking or chicken plucking or something that took up most of our day!
