Even the Native American tribes honored tontines. Of course it was a bit different back then but same principal.

This is much the same as the organization to which I belong called CHM. CHM stands for "Christian Health Ministries". When one of their parishioners is in the hospital with very limited insurance coverage, then CHM (if they are a member) steps in to help cover the costs of the patient.
You really should read/study about it. It's kinda fascinating actually. The Native American Tribes had no "hospital costs" back during the times of Sitting Bull or Little Elk, or Black Elk, etc., but they were there to help each other however they could when one of their tribesman was ill or hurt.
It's kinda fascinating, actually. Especially the history of the development of the practice and the word.
