This is the way I remember sweet potatoes being made when I was a kid. Sometimes my mom would put marshmallows on top of this but we didn't really like th em that way. My twin brothers would pick off the marshmallows and eat the topping and leave the sweet potatoes, too! They only liked the topping. I tried making a sweet potato pie one time to see if they'd like that but they didn't so we tried to stick with the original recipe. Contrary to the recipe at the link below, however, my mom always boiled the sweet potatoes although now that I know more about nutrition etc., I bake them as described in the recipe at the link. We NEVER mashed the sweet potatoes and slapped them into a pan and then put the streusel dressing on top - - YUK! That was like a strung out sweet potato pie, as far as I was concerned. No sir, I like the texture and the flavor of a plain baked potato or one with streusel topping, especially for holidays.
This year it's baked beans with hamburger and bacon for Thanksgiving and sweet potatoes for Christmas, we are having all the holidays at my son's house this year. They got rid of the cats and a couple of the foster kids so it should be better now. (I hope).

Did you know you can substitute sweet potatoes for carrots in almost any dish? You can also just bake a sweet potato and put butter (LOTS OF BUTTER!!!) and salt and pepper on it and eat it like a regular white baking potato? They are lovely that way and more nutritious than white baking potatoes.
For holidays I still prefer regular mashed white potatoes made with red, peeled, boiled potatoes, drained (save the cooking water for gravy you might need it for the starch! That starchy water works great whether you are having turkey or ham for your holiday meals! Leftovers are terrific! I have been known to eat cold mashed potatoes, cold sweet potatoes, cold corn on the cob - - hey I only eat 2 meals per day (lost 76 pounds since January of 2024) and I eat whatever the hell I want to eat! Hot or cold, I don't care!!
