My mom used to make this same thing and at the end we added about 2 cups of milk to make it stretch for our hearty eating, hard working family. I think she must have also added a couple of chicken bouillon cubes for flavor, too but I'm not sure about that. All I know is whatever it was called or however she made it, it was delicious. Ditto for her scalloped potatoes and ham made later from the same ham off the bone.
