Mercurochrome & merthiolate

Did y'all know that the stuff our Mom's used on us when we were kids (the merthiolte) is actually thimerosal???

I mean, I figured from the names that anything beginning with "mur or mer" contained mercury but I had no idea that thimerosal was actually used in the 1950's and 1960's as an *antiseptic*.  I remember that stuff vividly.  It burned like hell when Mom would put it on a cut or a scrape.  I also clearly remember the mercurochrome because it smelled good (at least I thought it did!).  Later on, however, Mom started using iodine on all of our cuts and scrapes.
