They have been since biblical days, only back then it was NOT tolerated and certainly not perpetuated as "normal".

Today, it's just plain a sickness, an illness, a fad in some cases, and people who do this crap often - - OFTEN regret it.  We've heard tons of stories about that, but few are actually reported and/or talked about.
